Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? Causes and Quick Fixes

Double Drip 10K Vape Kits and Bar Salt 10ml E-Liquids for travel

There are few things worse for vapers than a dry hit. Whether you are using a prefilled pod or a refillable kit, here is why it happens and how to stop it.

You take a puff, expecting the sweet taste of your favourite Double Drip Nic Salt, but instead, you are met with a harsh, acrid sensation that stings your throat. This is known as a "dry hit," and it is the most common complaint among new vapers.

The good news is that your device is likely fine. A burnt taste almost always comes down to the coil: the heating element inside your pod.

In this guide, we explain the four main reasons why coils burn out and the simple habits that will keep your flavour fresh. (For more on how coils work, see our main guide: What Is Vaping? The 2026 Guide to Prefilled and Refillable Kits.

Key Takeaways

The Cause: A burnt taste means the cotton wick inside your coil has dried out and singed.

The Fix: Once a coil is burnt, you cannot "un-burn" it. You must replace the pod or coil.

The Prevention: Always wait 5-10 minutes after filling a new pod (priming) before vaping.

The 10K Rule: For prefilled kits, ensure you wait 60 seconds after clicking the pod into place.

Cause 1: The "Dry Hit" – An Empty Tank?

The most obvious reason for a burnt taste is simply running out of liquid. The cotton inside your coil needs to be constantly saturated. If you vape your tank until it is bone dry, the coil tries to heat cotton that has no liquid in it. The result is instant burning.

The Fix:

Refillable Kits: Keep an eye on your liquid level. Top up your Starter Vape Kit before it drops below the "min" line or the wicking holes.

Prefilled Kits: If you are using a Double Drip 10K, check the transparent reservoir. If it is empty, the pod is finished and needs replacing.

Cause 2: The "Premature Burn" - Not Priming

If you insert a brand-new coil or pod and it tastes burnt immediately on the first puff, you have missed the "Priming" step.

When a coil is new, the cotton is completely dry. It takes time for the e-liquid to soak all the way through to the heating element. If you hit the fire button too soon, you are burning dry cotton.

The Fix:

Prefilled: After clicking the pod or reservoir into place, wait 60 seconds to allow the liquid to travel into the coil.

Refillable: After filling a new pod, wait 5 to 10 minutes before vaping.

Cause 3: Chain Vaping

Do you take several long puffs in quick succession? This is called "Chain Vaping," and it can kill coils quickly.

After every puff, your coil needs a few seconds to "re-wick" (absorb more liquid). If you vape faster than the cotton can absorb the juice, it will eventually dry out, leading to a burnt hit.

The Fix:

Slow down. Give your device a 15-30 second rest between puffs to let the bubbles rise and the liquid soak back in.

Cause 4: Sweetener Gunk - The "Caramel" Effect

Sometimes, a coil tastes burnt even if you have done everything right. This is often due to the e-liquid itself rather than a hardware fault.

Sweet, confectionery-inspired flavours (like those in our Double Drip Nic Salts range) rely on sweeteners to achieve their intense taste. Unlike the base liquid, these sweeteners do not always vaporise cleanly. Over time, they can leave a residue on the coil that caramelises into a dark layer, often called "coil gunk."

This is simply the cost of flavour. The sweeter the juice, the harder it works the coil.

The Fix:

This is normal wear and tear. When the flavour drops or takes on a toasted quality, simply replace the coil or Replacement Pod.

Conclusion

A burnt taste is your vape's way of telling you that something needs attention. Whether it is an empty tank, a dry coil, or just an old pod that has served its time, the solution is usually simple.

By keeping your tank topped up and waiting a few minutes for new coils to prime, you can ensure every puff tastes as good as the first.

FAQ's:

Can I fix a burnt coil?

If a brand-new coil tastes burnt, you likely didn't "prime" it. This means you didn't wait long enough after filling the pod for the cotton to soak up the liquid. Always wait 5-10 minutes with a new coil.

How often should I change my coil?

On average, a vape coil or refillable pod lasts between one and two weeks. This depends on how much you vape and how sweet your e-liquid is. Heavy vapers may need to change it every 5-7 days.

Why does my new coil taste burnt?

If a brand-new coil tastes burnt, you likely didn't "prime" it. This means you didn't wait long enough after filling the pod for the cotton to soak up the liquid. Always wait 5-10 minutes with a new coil.

Does wattage affect burnt taste?

Yes. If you run your device at a wattage higher than the coil is designed for (e.g., vaping a 15W coil at 40W), it will burn the cotton instantly. Always check the recommended wattage range printed on the side of your coil.
